Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer is not a disease of modern society; it was recognized by the Ancient Egyptians as long as 1600 B.C. However, breast cancer has become a major health problem over the last 50 years affecting as one in eight women during their life time Aim of work: The aim of the study was to find the effect of exposure to some risk factors on the occurrence of breast cancer and most common complication after treatment. Patients and methods: The study was carried out in the Oncology unit in Oncology Center- Mansoura University-Egypt (OCMU) during the period from March 2010 to April 2011. Cases were female patients with histologically-confirmed primary breast cancer according to the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology. Communication and interview of such cases were done together with review of their hospital records. Control subjects were matched one for one with age , residence and same ethnicity. Among well established risk factor of breast cancer; family history of breast cancer, past history of breast disease, early menarche, nulligravidity, nulliparity, smoking, exposure to radiation and intake of female hormones as a birth control method were significantly associated with higher risk of breast cancer in this study.
