Abstract

Age estimation of children and adolescents is important for pediatric dentists, orthodontists, and forensic odontology. In clinical dentistry it has an influence on diagnosis and treatment plan.
The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of age estimation in a sample of Egyptian and Northern Sudanese children and adolescents according to Demirjian’s method. Also, to find the relation between the chronological age and the calculated dental age of the same study groups. Another aim was to construct developmental maturity standards and dental maturity curves for Egyptian and Northern Sudanese children and adolescents.
This study was carried out utilizing Demirjian’s method on panoramic radiographs taken from patients records of 1036 Egyptian and Northern-Sudanese children and adolescents from both gender aged between 6 and 16 years.
The results showed that both Egyptian and Northern-Sudanese children and adolescents showed a more advanced dental age compared with Demirjian’s standard. In each studied population, girls were more advanced than boys in their dental development. The variation in difference between chronological age and dental age increased in older age groups in both studied populations.
The study results confirmed that Demirjian`s standards were not applicable to both Egyptian and Northern-Sudanese children. For this reason, new adapted dental maturity scores for both Egyptian and Northern-Sudanese children and adolescents were established for each gender and age group separately.
