Abstract

The liver is a vital organ present in vertebrates and some other animals; it has a wide range of functions, a few of which are detoxification, protein synthesis, and production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. Carbon tetrachloride was recognized as an hepatotoxin in the early 1920s. The pattern of zonal injury secondary to carbon tetrachloride is thought to be related to variations in the metabolic activities of liver cells in different regions of the lobule. The liver is necessary for survival; a human can only survive up to 24 hours without liver function. Carbon tetrachloride was recognized as an hepatotoxin in the early 1920s. The pattern of zonal injury secondary to carbon tetrachloride is thought to be related to variations in the metabolic activities of liver cells in different regions of the lobule. An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules.
