Abstract

This study was performed on 60 chosen patients of HCV chronic liver disease that were admitted to Ain Shams Hospital in Internal medicine units. All patients were diagnosed to have HCV chronic liver disease and were negative to HBsAg. History taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations, and abdominal ultrasound examination were done. We divided these patients into 3 groups of HCV chronic liver disease, 20 patients with chronic active hepatitis (no cirrhosis), 20 patients with liver cirrhosis and 20 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlation of occult HBV in various types of chronic HCV liver diseases.
Among our patients, we found that thirteen patients were positive to anti-HBc IgG which were diagnosed as occult hepatitis B by HBV PCR DNA representing 21.66%, while the other forty seven patients were negative to ant-HBc IgG representing 78.34%
It was found that coinfection of occult HBV with chronic HCV infection had negative effect on liver function tests. Also we found that the prevalence of occult HBV was different between the studied groups. It was higher among group of HCC in comparison to the other two groups. This may signify the effect of occult HBV on the severity of liver damage and its possible role in increasing the risk of HCC among HCV chronic liver disease.
We concluded that co-infection of occult HBV with chronic HCV infection is becoming increasingly recognized. Also, it has a role in deterioration of liver function tests and increases the risk of development of hepatocellular carcinoma. .
