Abstract

Respiratory distress is considered to be one of the major health problems in the neonatal period. Its treatment is largely supportive and includes all the general measures required for any high risk newborn. Proper positioning of the newborn with respiratory distress can improve oxygenation and reduce the need for supplemental oxygen. Newborns can benefit from being placed in either the Fowler’s ,prone and supine position with ” a roll ” under the shoulder positions to maximize airway caliber and promote efficient air flow. The NICU nurse should be a ware of the effect of different positions on oxygenation regarding their frequency and durations. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify the duration required to achieve maximum O2 saturation in different positions for newborn with respiratory distress.
Material and methods
This study was conducted at the neonatal high risk unit of ” El-Minia General Hospital ”. The study subject included 30 high risk neonates. All cases had fulfilled the following criteria:
Full term newborn.
Had respiratory distress assessed by the following ” Tachpnea, Dyspnea, Cyanosis, Nasal flaring and intercostal and / or suprasternal retraction ”
Not on mechanical ventilator.
Free from any other health problems.
Had normal body temperature and hemoglobin level.
