Abstract

A total number of 92 resident wild birds belong to different five species (Squacco heron, Little grebe, Moorhen, Purple gallinule and Little tern) in Lake Manzala were examined for determination the best bird and tissue (liver, muscle and breast feathers) can be used as bio-indicator for heavy metals pollution. The result revealed that the best bio-indicator for Cd and Zn is the feathers of the little tern, for Pb is the feathers of the little grebe and that for Cu is the muscle of moorhen. Generally the little tern is the best species among the examined species as bio-indicator for Cd and Zn while all the examined species is nearly similar as bio-indicator for Cu and Pb. The assessment of heavy metals pollution in Lake Manzala showed high level of all metals in the sediment samples above the permissible limits except Pb. Also the muscle of fish samples showed high level of Cd, Pb and Zn above the permissible limits.
