Abstract

Up to 96% of patients with cirrhosis may be glucose intolerant and 30% may be clinically diabetic. The impact of diabetes on the long-term prognosis and the synergistic interactions of various host factors for diabetes to the progression of liver fibrosis are unknown. Only few prospective studies assessing the impact of diabetes on morbidity and mortality of cirrhotic patients have been published. This prospective cohort study was conducted to find out the impact of diabetes mellitus on the morbidity and mortality of patients with HCV related cirrhosis. The work was done in the outpatient clinic of the Communicable Diseases Research and Training Center (CDRTC) in Suez city from November 2008 to June 2010. It included 118 cirrhotic patients of grade B and C according to Child-Pugh classification. They were divided into two subgroups; 69 non-diabetic group (58.5%) and 49 diabetic one (41.5%).
