Abstract

Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea is the most frequently
identified cause of nosocomial diarrhea. C.difficle causes a wide range of
clinical syndromes, inducing asymptomatic colonization, antibiotic
associated diarrhea and pseudemembrance colitis. Pseudemembrance
colitis can progress to megacolon and subsequent death.
The current study was done in order to determine the
incidence, risk factors of C.difficile infection in PICU.
This study was conducted in pediatric ICU, children’s
hospitals, Ain Shams University and included 45 patients, in the
period between January 2007 to May 2007.
Patients were classified into patients with diarrhea group (A
33) and patient without diarrhea group (B) 33 patients without
diarrhea group (B) they were 12.
For all included patients full medical history was taken
thorough clinical examinations was done. Laboratory investigations
were done as CBC, CRP, urea, creatinine, SGPT, SGOT, PT, and
PTT. The study also included assay of C.difficile toxins A/B in stool
collected from patients on the first day of admission and again after 5
days of admission to PICU.
