Abstract

Staph aureus is a human flora found in the axilla, inguinal region and the anterior nares. Staph aureus nasal carriage is described to fall under three patterns 20 % of the individuals being persistent carriers, 60 % intermittent carriers and 20 % persistent non-carriers. Nasal carriage rate is found to be higher in the renal unit than normal ranging between 44-84%. Why renal unit patients have higher carriage rate is not understood may be because of immunodeficiency, the presence of prosthetic material and frequent breaches of skin associated with veno-puncture.
Staph aureus nasal carriage is a source of infection in a hemodialysis patient. Infection is considered the second cause of death in hemodialysis unites so it is important to detect patients and workers in the hemodialysis unit with staph aureus nasal carriage and treat them. Also primary prophylactic treatment to the hemodialysis patients by applying mupirocin calcium ointment in the nostrils. This gives protection for nearly three months against staph aureus nasal carriage MSSA even against MRSA.
In our hospital the prevalence of staph aureus nasal carriage was found to be 38.9 % in both patients and workers. Workers’ infections mostly MSSA about 6.5 % no MRSA.
In patient , the prevalence of staph aureus nasal carriage among them was 18.1 % MSSA and 14.3 % MRSA.
It is found that no relation of age, sex, etiology of renal dialysis, duration of dialysis and smoking to do with prevalence of staph aureus nasal carriage.
