Abstract

The objective of the study
This research tries to prevent or limit the contamination transport due to domestic sewerage water to the groundwater, and this by putting sheet piles which make contamination path too longer and then delay the leaking out of contamination to the groundwater and make it confined in specific area for a long time.
The way of study
And this research study the effect of locating sheet piles to prevent or limit the contamination transport due to domestic sewerage water to the groundwater, it is also intended to find the best solution according to the different placing and different lengths of the sheet pile in variable values of hydraulic conductivity and the thickness of soil. A two dimensional model is used to solve the problem numerically using the finite element method (FEM) which is based on dividing the complicated domains into small and manageable blocks and shells to obtain results which spot light on the optimal way to reach the sought solution.
This research has seven chapters:
1. Chapter 1: contains a general introduction of groundwater (definition, sources and types of contamination and effects of soil pollution on agriculture, industry and urban).
2. Chapter 2: present the previous works about contaminant transport.
3. Chapter 3: has simple explanation about the mathematical fundamentals of contaminant transport.
4. Chapter 4: display a brief summery about finite element analysis which used to solve two dimensional models in this research.
5. Chapter 5: describe the problem in this research with all parameters and variables, and study the effect of using sheet piles to limit or prevent the contamination transport.
6. Chapter 6: contain charts which present the relations between the variables such as length and location of sheet pile from the contamination source with contamination flow, also contain comments and notes about these charts.
7. Chapter 7: present the conclusions from these charts and the recommendations about the best properties of sheet piles to give a good result for the problem.
