Abstract This study was done on one hundred and seventeen albino mice which were classified into four experimental groups:- Group I (n =27): Control group which was subclassified into 3 subgroups:- • Subgroup Ia (n = 9): Non-infected and non-treated mice (control negative). • Subgroup Ib (n =9): Non-infected mice and given albendazole orally 100 mg/kg of the body weight, once a day for five consecutive days. • Subgroup Ic (n=9): Non-infected mice and given aminoguanidine in a dose of 50 mg/kg of the body weight I.P. different dpi. • Group II (n = 30): Infected mice by oral inoculation of a suspension containing 1000 embryonated T. canis eggs (infected non-treated mice = control positive group). Group III (n = 30): Infected mice by oral inoculation of 1000 embryonated T. canis eggs and given albendazole orally from the first day of infection in a dose of 100 mg/kg once for 5 consecutive days. Group IV (n = 30): Infected mice by oral inoculation of 1000 embryonated T. canis eggs and aminoguanidine was administered I.P. in a total dose of 50 mg/kg of the body weight different dpi. One gram of each of the following: liver, lung, muscle and brain tissues was taken from each mouse of different groups at different days after sacrification and digested in pepsin-HCl to examine the larval recovery. The remaining portion from each organ was preserved in 10% formalin solution for histopathological and immunohistochemical (iNOS) studies. Serum samples were obtained from each mouse for nitrite (NO) assay. The present study showed that: The mean number of T. canis larvae recovered from liver and lung tissues was significantly higher at 2nd than 7th dpi in groups II, III and IV (p<0.001***). The larvae were recovered from muscle and brain only at 7th and 45th dpi in groups II, III and IV. In group II, the mean number of larvae was increased significantly from 7th to 45th dpi (p<0.001***), however in groups III and IV, it was decreased significantly from 7th to 45th dpi (p<0.05* & p<0.001*** respectively). After treatment with albendazole or aminoguanidine, the mean number of T. canis larvae recovered from all tissues of infected mice was significantly lower at 45th than 7th dpi. But, aminoguanidine caused more decrease in larval count in brain tissue compared to albendazole. |
