Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of ROEMIN W2 (a combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus thermophilus and Bifidobacteria) on prevention and or treatment of broiler chicks infected with E. Coli. One hundred fifty-one day old chicks were divided into five equal groups, GpI kept as control non treated non infected group. Gp II received probiotic only, Gp III infected only with E. Coli, Gp IV received probiotic then infected with E. coli and kept as protective group and GP V infected firstly with E. Coli then treated with probiotic and kept as infected treated group. At the end of experimental period blood samples were collected for biochemical and hematological studies. Specimens from most organs collected for histopathological studies. Specimens from duodenum collected for scanning electron microscopy study. Results revealed significant increase of weight gain and FCR in group II compared with other groups. Histomorphological results showed significant increase in length of villi and decrease depth of crypt in groups treated with probiotics when compared with control while infected non treated group showed decrease length of villi and increase depth of crypt when compared with other groups. SEM examination of E. Coli infected group Showed short distorted duodenal villi with massive destruction and loss. The Intestinal mucosa and epithelial cells of some villi as well as those in crypt areas showed massive necrosis, porous & collapsed villi tips of several blebs. whereas the duodenal villi treated with probiotics showed normal lengthy long finger like projection and crypt area showed numerous number of proliferating enterocytes that having longer microvilli when compared with other groups.
