Abstract BEFV is a non contiguous epizootic arthropode born viral disease of cattle and water buffaloes, caused by single stranded RNA virus of genus ephemerovirus and characterized by sudden onset fever, depression, stiffness and lameness. The clinical severity of the disease is inconsistent with the subsequent rapid recovery of the most affected animals. The disease is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical area in Africa, south Asia, Australia and enzootic in many countries including Egypt, as many outbreaks occurred in the summer season of 1991,2000,2001,2004. The disease occurred sporadically in 7 Egyptian governorates where the suspected samples were collected in summer season in 2006 and 2009. The total number of samples were 115 serum samples for antibody detection, 95 blood with anticoagulant and 206 nasal swabs for virus isolation. All samples were collected from small stalk held having small number of animals and from dairy farm in Damietta. The BEFV was isolated from buffy coat of the suspected animals on vero cell line producing the characteristic CPE after 3 passages began by cell vaccuolation and ended by detachment of the sheet from the glass 72 h post inoculation. The result of virus isolation on tissue culture from nasal swabs were 0 samples out of 206 giving positive result (0 %) while from buffy coats 17 samples out of 95 giving positive result (17.81 %) respectively |
