Abstract

Researcher’s Name: Mohamed Abdul Rahman Al Sayed Sa’ey.
Research Title: The Effectiveness of a Lexical Approach – Based Programme on Optimizing English language Majors’ Functional Use of Lexis in their Written Expression.
Source: Ain Shams University, Faculty of Education, Curriculum and Instruction Department.
The purpose of this descriptive study was two-fold: a- to maximize the participants’ lexical knowledge and their functional use of lexis as reflected in their written production; b- to increase their self-reliance to be autonomous learners. Participants were 145 second year English majors at the Faculty of Education, Ain Shams University. Four tools were utilized in the study. The LDAP (Lexis Development Activity Programme) was the main instrument manipulated to achieve the afore-mentioned purpose. Group as well as individual portfolios were developed to determine how far participants’ written production was enhanced. The third tool was students’ reflection time sheet on the course. A scoring sheet was the last tool used to assess participants’ written production. Results indicated mixed results: a positive attitude towards authentic learning was partly developed, i.e., producing the English language using appropriate and necessary lexical items in all forms, especially in writing, was maximized with some participants; some others were still trying to be fully engaged; whereas, the rest did not show any motivation or even interest except towards the end of the treatment.
