Abstract

: Ecological and Physiological Studies on Algal Flora of El-Dare Wastewater Treatment Plant at Sohag District.
Candidate: Asmaa Bakr Ahmed Mohamed
Botany Department, Faculty of Science, Sohag University.
This investigation is a contribution to the study of algal flora inhabiting El Dare wastwaterTreatment Plant [inlet (site 1) and outlet (site 2)] present in Sohag Governorate, Egypt. This study was performed seasonally to determine the qualitative changes in the algal flora and related changes in chemical and physical status of the environment. The physico-chemical characteristics (Temperature, pH and the chemistry of El-Dare Wastewater Treatment Plant) varied among the experimental seasons and sites. The total algal genera in the station varied among the experimental seasons and sites too. The green algae Ankistrodesmus falcatus and Chlorella vulgaris were the most dominant algae in water, therefore we picked up these algae to study further the heavy metals (copper sulphate) tolerance and to follow some physiological parameters associated with the heavy metal tolerance of these algae. The physiological parameters growth criteria, carbohydrates , protein contents , nitrate reductase activity, total free amino acids, proline content and phenolic compounds were determined. These results indicated that, Ankistrodesmus falcatus tolerated copper sulphate until 250 µM , and Chlorella vulgaris tolerated copper sulphate until 100 µM which were associated with remarkable induction of new polypeptides or disappearance of present polypeptides, and protein metabolism, which might responsible for the heavy metal tolerance of these algae.
