Abstract

In the present work, the way which rain storms pollute the soil, the contaminant transport through porous medium, and the contaminant control using wells are studied. The contaminants motion in soils is treated in two dimensions using the finite element method. The equations of contaminant transport through advection, diffusion, dispersion, and adsorption are combined with the groundwater flow equations to obtain the contaminant distribution as a function of soil, contaminant and fluid properties. The study includes the behaviors of contaminant flow through the soil for the case of no wells and that when wells are used to reduce contaminant concentration. The effects of place, height and head of well on the contaminant flow rates are calculated. Design charts are presented to quantify the effects of wells on the hydraulic control of the groundwater flow field. from the charts, the economic wells depths can be selected depending on the allowable of contaminant concentration on the soil that reduces the effect on plants to allowable limits.
