Abstract

The initiative role of the Pharaohs physician or the swnw, to classify the fever according to the number of days it lasts, was the first scientific approach to fevers recognition and uptake. Swnws knew that fevers are due to tiny noxious creatures that moves inside the body ducts (vessels) [I]. Just in the recent few years, the Egyptian Supreme Council of Archeology proved that King Tut died from a knee wound sepsis. As long as 2735 BC, the Chinese emperor, Sheng Nung, wrote about the use of herbal medicines to treat fevers brought on by sepsis. The concept of ”sepsis” dates at least as far back as the time of Hippocrates and was viewed as a process of dangerous, odorous biologic decay, or putrefaction. Ancient Greeks believed this process was one form of biologic breakdown that could occur within the body and, that was due to ”dangerous principles” within the colon, that are capable of causing ”autointoxication”. Aristotle, and later the Romans, proposed that the process of sepsis resulted from the production of invisible living creatures that emanated from putrid fumes termed miasmata, in the swamps [21. Avicenna (Ibn Sina) was the first to differentiate between symptomatic (pyrexia) and original fevers. He was also the first to apply the concept of meat putrefaction for the selection of hospital places. Many other Arabic physicians wrote books on fevers, including sepsis [11.
