Abstract

Egypt has a very high prevalence of HCV and a high morbidity and mortality from chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Two classes of assays are used in the diagnosis and management of HCV infection: serologic assays that detect specific antibody to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV) and molecular assays that detect viral nucleic acid.
This study tried to study and evaluate the performance of the OraQuick HCV rapid antibody test in the diagnosis of HCV infection by detection of HCV Abs in the oral fluid of 200 candidates, classified into four groups.
Careful history taking, clinical examination and laboratory investigations including blood picture, liver & kidney functions were done.
Detection of HCV-Ab by ELISA test was done and finally Detection of HCV-Ab in oral fluid by using OraQuick HCV rapid antibody test.
The results were compared by the ELISA test for all the 200 subjects.
In this study the overall sensitivity was 100% and the overall specificity was 100%. Sensitivity and specificity for anti-HCV were virtually identical between the OraQuick HCV rapid antibody test and the traditional laboratory method (ELISA).
In summary, the OraQuick HCV rapid antibody test appears suitable as an aid in the diagnosis of HCV infection and ideal for both clinical and outreach settings. In addition, it is simple, non invasive and rapid as it takes about 20 minutes to obtain results
