Abstract Several risk factors for DVT were identified in surgical patients presenting with DVT in the postoperative period, and their comprehension may improve appropriateness and efficiency of the different methods available for thromboprophylaxis. Among general surgery patients, those undergoing colorectal surgical procedures are at a higher-than-average risk for developing postoperative DVT because these procedures tend to be prolonged, patients are often placed in the lithotomy position, and a pelvic dissection is commonly performed. Furthermore; the indication for surgery is often cancer or inflammatory bowel disease, and these are known to be risk factors for thrombo-embolism. |
