Abstract

There is a growing interest in QT dispersion as a marker for arrhythmic potential being a marker of inhomogeneity of ventricular repolarization. The QT dispersion is increased in myocardial ischemia and also in liver cirrhosis.
This study was performed to evaluate the relation of end stage liver cirrhosis and QT dispersion as a non invasive predictor of ventricular arrhythmias.
The study included 100 patients admitted in Kafre El-Sheikh Liver Center by end stage liver cirrhosis.
All patients were subjected to a detailed history taking, careful clinical assessment, ECG, QT dispersion (QTcD) measurement and liver function tests.
QT interval, corrected QT interval (maximum and minimum) and corrected QT dispersion (QTcD)were manually measured from 12-lead ECG.
Our study showed that QTcD were significantly increased in end stage liver cirrhosis.
The study found that QTcD is significantly correlated to changes in serum albumin, serum Bilirubin (total and direct), prothrombin activity, presence of ascites and presence of lower limb edema but not to changes in liver enzyme levels(AST, ALT and ALP).
Based on the after mentioned data, this study concluded that patients with end stage liver cirrhosis are liable to ventricular arrhythmias guided by presence of QTc dispersion
