Abstract

Habitual snoring is a common disorder that can lead to serious longterm heath and social problems. It is considered a risk factor for development of hypertension, ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease.
The current work was conducted on forty five patients divided into 2 groups
Group I: Thirty patients underwent palatal mucosal flap in which it was further divided into 2 subgroups according to instrument used in the procedure:
- Fifteen patients the palatal mucosal flap was done using CO2 laser.
- Fifteen patients the palatal mucosal flap was done using Ellman surgitron radiofrequency.
Group II: Fifteen patients underwent somnoplasty palatal stiffness procedure by using Celon Lap ENT.
CT scan showed evident reteropalatal narrowing concluding that during wakefulness the reteropalatal area in patients with snoring is narrower than normal people.
As regarding the patient satisfaction, the palatal mucosal flap procedure showed 80% satisfactory patients and 20% unsatisfactory patients. while in the somnoplasty group there were 46.7% satisfactory patients and 53.3% unsatisfactory patients.
The increase in satisfactory results in the palatal mucosa flap technique may be due to removal of mucosa which leads to more fibrosis to the palate
Somnoplasty is a procedure with less pain and complications than the palatal mucosal flap and it’s end result will not be achieved before 3rd month postoperatively.
Increase in the BMI, collar size and operating on deep type of palate leads to increase in the incidence of patient`s unsatisfactory outcome.
