Abstract

Brain attack or stroke is the second common cause of death worldwide. The health care management of stroke patient needs a cooperative multidisciplinary team with trained qualified and skillful health staff. The nurse is the corner stone of that team that collaborate and coordinate patient’s care 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Therefore, providing nursing care for stroke patient requires accurate and efficient performance based on up to date knowledge that leads to ensure high quality of nursing care and positive patients’ outcomes. Nursing standards provide nurses with a framework that guide nursing care practice and facilitate articulation of the nursing role within the health care team. Nursing care standards are benchmarks to measure nurses’ performance and useful tools for them to determine what knowledge and skills are required to provide quality care. Therefore, establishing nursing care standards for stroke patient is the first step towards improving nursing care quality of stroke patient’s.
The aim of this study was to establish standards of nursing care for stroke patient.
The study was conducted in the stroke unit of the neuropsychiatric department of Gamal Abdel Nasser Health Insurance hospital, and El-Hadara orthopedic and traumataulogy University hospital to ensure the availability of the subjects. The subjects of this study were consisted of two groups:
Group I: consisted of 36 expert members in medical and nursing education and 5 head nurses with more than 5 years of experience working in neuropsychiatric department of Gamal Abdel Nasser hospital.
Group II consisted of (50) nurses providing direct care to stroke patient in the stroke unit of the neuropsychiatric department of Gamal Abdel Nasser Health Insurance hospital.
Four Tools were developed by the researcher based on the review of recent related literature to collect the necessary data for this study were named as Tool I: Basic nursing competencies for stroke patient opinionnair; that developed in order to elicit opinions of (Group I) as regards the basic required nursing competencies for the care of stroke patient during hospitalization
Tool II: Observation checklist of nursing performance for stroke patient; this tool was developed to assess the actual nurse’s performance in caring of stroke patient
Tool III: Observational checklist for structure of stroke unit; this tool was developed to assess the actual structure of the stroke unit in Gamal Abdel Nasser Health Insurance hospital
Tool IV: Stroke patient nurse’s knowledge questionnaire; A structured written questionnaire was developed to address the nurse’s knowledge of stroke patient care (Group II).
