Abstract

This retrospective study included 186 patients with nonmelanoma skin cancers ,who carried out in Plastic Surgery Department, Assiut University Hospital, Assiut , Egypt, 161 patients of them were on top of normal skin and 25 were on top of xeroderma pigmentosum.
The purpose of this study were review the epidemiology and management of non melanoma skin cancers, review the epidemiology and management of xeroderm pigmentosum (XP) and make a comparative study between epidemiological data of conventional skin carcinoma versus skin carcinoma complicating xeroderma pigmentosum.
In our retrospective study about conventional skin carcinoma we noticed that basal cell carcinoma more common than squamous cell carcinoma, male patients commonly affected than females, solitary skin lesion presentation was a characteristic feature, 2-4 cm was the commonest size for BCC lesions but most of SCC lesions were larger than 4cm, the mean age was 57.9 years for BCC but it was 53.9 years for SCC and the commonest site in BCC was nose followed by cheek but in SCC was lower lip followed by lower limb.
In our retrospective study on xeroderma pigmentosum patients complicated with BCC and SCC we noticed that number of BCC patients were more or less equal to the number of SCC patients, equal numbers of male and female patients, multiplicity of skin lesions was a characteristic feature, The mean age at initial presentation with the tumor was 12 years and the site distribution for both types of lesions (BCC&SCC) more than half of them was nose and cheek.
In the present study as a comparison between conventional skin carcinoma versus skin carcinoma complicating xeroderma pigmentosum according to (type of the lesion, age, sex, site distribution and number of the lesions) the following finding were clearly noticed:
• Basal cell carcinoma was highly significant more common than Squamous cell carcinoma on top of normal skin but in xeroderma pigmentosum patients no significant difference can be detected between these two types of lesions.
• A skin cancer in xeroderma pigmentosum mainly occurred in teenagers about 50 years less than that among patients with skin cancer on top of normal skin.
• In conventional skin cancer male patients were highly significant more commonly affected than females but in xeroderma pigmentosum no significant difference could be noticed between males and females.
• Multiplicity of skin cancers on top of xeroderma pigmentosum was a highly significant character in comparison with skin cancers on top of normal skin on the other hand; the presentation with solitary skin cancer on top of normal skin was a high significant character for this group of patients.
• In Nonmelanoma skin cancers on top of normal skin the commonest site for BCC was the nose and the commonest site for SCC was the lower lip. But in XP the commonest site for both BCC and SCC was the butter fly area (nose and cheeks).
