Abstract

The on-going increase in the electrical power consumption and the increased use of power electronic components in machines and instrumentation has caused many problems and unclear phenomena that adversely affect the electrical power system. This includes the nonlinear loads such as variable speed drives, computers, arc furnaces, switching mode power supplies, and other harmonic¬generating equipment.
These phenomena appear largely in big factories, water and waste water treatment plants, malls, and large consumers of electricity. Therefore electric power quality has become a major concern of utilities, end users as well as manufacturers.
This scientific report aims to assess the electrical power quality in an existing water treatment plant.
A case study is considered in Maamoura Water Treatment Plant in Alexandria Water Company. The objective is to perform an electrical power quality assessment and to monitor power quality parameters by using a power quality analyzer. Measurements are taken at five points at the low voltage side of existing transformers. Results are analyzed and interpreted and then compared to power quality standards that are published in the literature.
This study reveals that while some of the measured parameters lie within the standard limits, some others, however, do not.
This brings the issue of importance of continuous monitoring for the electrical power quality in the water treatment plant along the year so that right decisions might be taken in order to alleviate any anticipated problems.
