Abstract

Hepatitis C is a serious public health problem that threatens the quality of life of patients with the disease. It is a chronic disease of lifelong duration, and its management requires a fundamental change in the patient’s lifestyle. Lack of knowledge about the nature of the disease, its complications, self-care skills, and misinformation and/or misunderstanding of the therapeutic plan were a major aspect of nonnadherence to treatment.
Aim of the study:
To identify the current status of knowledge, attitude and practice towards HCY among patients with HCY-infection in interferon unit and among HCWS in the one-day surgery hospital in Samalot city.
Research hypothesis:
We hypothesized that patients with hepatitis C attending interferon unit in Samalot city and health care workers looking after them lack the proper knowledge and attitude toward hepatitis C and malpractice in such a way that affect patients’ access to care and compliance leading to poor management of patients with hepatitis C in EI-Minia governorate. Subjects and methods:
The study was a cross-sectional study; the target population included 222 patients attending hepatitis C interferon unit in Samalot city and 79 HCWS who work in the one-day surgery hospital and its interferon unit in the period from the 1st of January to the 30th of June 2010. Data were collected by a questionnaire that included socioodemographic data and data related to knowledge, attitude and practices towards hepatitis C.
In this study, subjects were divided into 2 groups:
-1st gp: HCWs in the one day surgery hospital were subdivided into: doctors, nurses.
Criteria of inclusion:
- All HCWS in the one day surgery hospital with years of experien more than one year
- No restriction for age or sex.
-2nd gp: patients with HCV infection Criteria of inclusion:
- All patients receiving treatment (i.e. antiviral therapy in form of ribavirin and interferon) and those under assessment for anti-HeV treatment at interferon unit in the one day surgery hospital in Samalot district in the period from 1 st of January to 30 th of June 2010.
- No restriction for age or sex.
Exclusion criteria:
- HCWs with experience less than one year.
- Patients from outside the interferon unit.
Statistical analysis:
Data entry and analysis were all done with IBM compatible computer using software called Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) for windows version 13, and microstats program. Graphics were done using Excel.
The probability of less than 0.05 used as a cut off point for all significant tests.
ResultS:
-As regard HCV -infected pI
the increase in the level of (p=0.002) but not as regard 1 and p==0.5) respectively.
-As regard the knowledge transmitted by injection, wI transmitted by intercourse, transmitted by air or by foo that HCV can be transmitted
_ More than half of patie complications, 37.8% ans after cure, 35.1% said that interferon can completely very important, on the 0 relationship between viral
