Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the results of cervical disc arthroplasty in the treatment of cervical disc diseases. Design and settings: This study was performed on forty patients with cervical disc diseases who were treated by total intervertebral cervical disc prostheses (Prodisc-C) at Regional Hospital Liberec, Czech Republic.
Patients and methods: Assessment concentrated on clinical assessment, radiological assessment and nerve conduction study. Inclusion criteria were patients with disc herniations, with or without mild to moderate degenerative changes causing radiculopathy and/or myelopathy. All patients were conservatively treated for at least 6 weeks, unless there was neurologic deterioration that was present in 5 patients. All patients were assessed clinically using self-assessment questionnaires and neurological examination and radiologically by anteroposterior, lateral and flexion-extension lateral views at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, one year and 2 years postoperatively. All patients are followed up for 2 years.
Results:.The improvement in the mean VAS for neck pain intensity and frequency, and mean VAS for arm pain intensity and frequency was highly statistically significant at all follow-up observations when compared to the preoperative values.
