Abstract This work represents a detailed study to delineate the main aquifers and to locate the direction of Pelusaic paleoriver in the northeast Nile Delta. This work depends mainly on shallow refraction seismic investigations in addition to geomorphological and hydrogeological studies. Twenty seismic refraction profiles are measured in two neighboring areas. The first area is located near Tell Farma which includes historical settlements of late Romanan age. The second area is also near a historical site called Tell Luili. The distance between every two successive geophones was 10 m. i.e., the maximum length of the profile was 240 m. The seismic refraction profiles were carried using Geometerics, INC Strataveiw Seismograph 24 Channels. The interpretation of seismic refraction profiles was carried out using the Siesimager /2D and Sip software. The interpretation of the refraction seismic data shows some depressions that can considered as parts of the Pelusaic paleoriver. Also, the isopach maps of the second layer as well as depth contour map were used to detect the course of the Pelusaic branch. from geomorphological point of view, the study area can be divided into six main units. The hydrogeological data collected from available wells are used to determine the depth to the groundwater level and the direction of flow in the study area. Finally, the course of the Pelusaic branch could be traced in other parts of the Nile Delta can be traced based on the distribution of old settlements (Predynestic and old kingdom), previous geophysical studies and satellite images in addition to the results of the present seismic exploration. |
