Abstract

Childhood bronchial asthma represents one of the most common health problems in both developed and developing countries. This is because it is responsible for much morbidity and mortality and has an impact on the social and emotional aspects of lives of the children and their families. This might be decreased by increasing parental and patient knowledge and skills about asthma.
It is estimated that nine million children in America under the age of 18 have been diagnosed with asthma and approximately 5,000 Americans die every year from asthma.
The burden of asthma seen on all members of the family, especially the mother and extends beyond the immediate effects on children’s physical, emotional and social wellbeing, also affecting the lives of parents or care provider’s lives in terms of worry and concern about the disease and the medication used to treat it. Thus the community health nurse plays a major role in the care of children and their families. She should educate the children with asthma and their parents about the nature of the disease, help the individuals achieve adherence with prescribed asthma treatment regimens, including asthma medications, avoidance of allergens, and keeping follow-up asthma monitoring visits with the health care provider.
Hence, the aim of the current study is to assess the mother’s knowledge, practices and attitudes regarding their children with bronchial asthma. The study was carried out in the out-patient clinic of El Mansoura pediatric university hospital and two maternal and child health care centers at El Mansoura city namely : maternal and child health care awal and maternal and child health care rabei. The studied sample was (420) mothers and their children with confirmed diagnosis of bronchial asthma were selected, their age were less than 18 years.
