Abstract

Scabies is considered a major public health problem in today’s world especially in developing countries where there is poverty, overcrowding, illiteracy and diminished emphasis on public health. Scabies is almost an every day diagnosis in the dermatological clinics, and it remains common despite being easily treated. This is because it can be difficult in both the diagnosis and the adequate treatment of patients and their contacts. Scabies is a prevalent skin condition that affects people of any age, all social class, race and both sex.
Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded condition as in schools, institutions and elderly homes. It cause significant morbidity from secondary infections and post infective complication such as acute post -streptococcal glomerunephrites. Early case finding, proper diagnosis for cases, treatment of the affected individual and all people in contact with patients. Moreover advices given to the patients for medication compliance and proper use of medication improve socioeconomic conditions and implement educational programs to reduce stigma of scabies will significantly affect on disease control.
The aim of this study is:
To identify the factors associated with occurrence of scabies among patients attending health centers in Alexandria.
The study was carried out on a sample composed of 600 patients male and female from 3 governmental skin clinics by using multistage sampling technique. A structured interview tool was developed and used to assess the health behaviors of scabetic patients as well as their knowledge about scabies.
The data were collected during the period from February 2006 to the end of December 2007.
