Abstract

COPD is a disease state characterised by a progressive and disabling deterioration in lung function. The typical symptoms of COPD include persistent cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath and sputum production. These symptoms are often distressing, severely restricting patient’s ability to perform normal daily activities and significantly affecting their quality of life.
COPD patients come to physicians seeking relief of symptoms. Therefore interventions that would reduce these symptoms and improve functions of patients are of prime importance. QoL measures do not substitute for physiologic parameters, but can complement these by incorporating aspects of health and disease that are directly perceived by the patient.
This work was carried out on 40 patients with COPD diagnosed and classified according to GOLD 2010.
All patients in the present study underwent full history taking, complete clinical examination, routine laboratory investigations, chest X-ray (poster- anterior and lateral views) to assess general and chest conditions. They also underwent pulmonary function tests and SGRQ-C that consists of three sections and a total score: Symptoms, measuring the frequency and severity of respiratory symptoms; Activity, measuring limitation of activities by breathlessness and activities that cause breathlessness; Impacts, measuring disturbances in social and psychological functioning due to airway disease; Total score summarizes the impact of the disease on overall health status

Summary
The mean age of the patients was 59.9±4.7 years, there was a non statistically significant difference between different grades of COPD severity as regarding their age (P>0.05).
In the present work, 38 patients were smoking, there was a highly statistically significant difference between different grades of COPD severity as regarding their smoking index (p≤0.001).
There was a highly statistically significant difference between different grades of COPD severity as regarding their SGRQ-C score (total score, symptom score, activity score and impact score) and different (p≤0.001).
There was a statistically significant negative correlation between FEV1, FEV1/FVC, PEFR, FEF25-75% and SGRQ-C score (total score, symptoms score, activity score and impact score). While there was a non statistically significant correlation between FVC and SGRQ-C score (total score, symptoms score, activity score and impact score).
In this study there was a statistically significant positive correlation between symptoms score, impact score and smoking index. While there was a non statistically significant correlation between total score, activity score and smoking index.
These results emphasise on the impact of COPD on the QoL .This is translated into an increase in SGRQ-C score (total score, symptoms score, activity score and impact score) for these individuals.
