Abstract This thesis presents a structured stimulation program (SSP) for critically ill patients with altered consciousness. SSP is the core aspect for rehabilitation care of AC, which must be begun in the ICUs to increase the possibility for maximal recovery, decrease hospital stays, improve transitions from inpatient to outpatient rehabilitation centers, accelerate a patient’s cognitive recovery and prevent secondary complications. The rehabilitative care for patients with AC is a significant challenge for nurses as they are responsible for all patients’ care. So the CCN should play a more active and meaningful role by rendering the SSP into the conventional care for AC to enhance brain recovery. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of implementing a SSP on AC of critically ill patients. This study was conducted in ICUs of Emergency Hospital, Mansoura University. Two tools were developed and used to collect the data; sensory motor functions assessment sheet and autonomic responses observation sheet. The SSP for patients with AC was provided for 7 days, 2 sessions a day; one session during morning shift after morning conventional nursing care and the second one during afternoon shift after afternoon conventional nursing care. The results of the present study were tabulated and discussed in this thesis. |
