Abstract

Smoking is a great national disaster in Egypt as it impacts health, economy and social aspects of the community. It has become worse and worse in since 1990s as it has become more and more prevalent among youth and teenagers.
Egypt is the largest tobacco consuming country in the Arab region, with nearly 40% of adult males and a little less than 1% of adult females currently using tobacco. Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use, followed by waterpipe smoking and smokeless tobacco use.
The first 2 motives for smoking in Egypt are associated with participation and encouragement by friends followed by family related derives as negligence, problems or smoking member(s).
In addition to the numerous diseases caused by tobacco use, the health care cost of treating these diseases is substantial. Estimates indicate that about 3.4 billion EGP (US$ 616 million) are spent annually in Egypt to treat the diseases caused by tobacco use. The premature deaths and disability caused by smoking result in significant lost productivity.
Egypt’s partial and uneven restrictions on tobacco company marketing, incomplete restrictions on smoking in public places and workplaces, weakly enforced ban on sales to minors, limited efforts to raise awareness about the consequences of tobacco use and minimal resources dedicated to tobacco control appear to have had little effect on tobacco use.
Tobacco cultivation is prohibited in Egypt. However, it is estimated that there are 39 billion cigarettes manufactured in Egypt per year (about 0.7% of the world trade). And 17.000 persons are employed full- time in the tobacco industry.
Smoking is the first preventable cause of death in the world. Stop smoking reduces the risk of many of the conditions associated with smoking. Although for some conditions the risk falls off quickly after quitting toward the level of a never smokers, for others there remains an elevated risk for many decades. This means that it is important to promote smoking cessation as early as possible among young smokers who have the greatest chance of avoiding adverse smoking-related events.
Methods of smoking cessation (a) Abrupt cessation”Cold turkey”. (b) Gradual cessation using Pharmacological, Non Pharmacological Interventions or Combined Use of Non-pharmacological and Pharmacological Interventions.
Conclusion: Smoking is a great national disaster in Egypt. Egypt is the largest tobacco consuming country in the Arab region, with nearly 40% of adult males and a little less than 1% of adult females currently using tobacco. Current daily smoker spent about 109.8 EGP per month on their cigarettes. About 3.4 billion EGP are spent annually to treat the diseases caused by tobacco use. Egypt has limited efforts to raise awareness about the consequences of tobacco use and minimal resources dedicated to tobacco control appear to have had little effect on tobacco use. Although there are cessation clinics available in Egypt, they are not as effective as hoped.
