Abstract

Reducing CO2 emission in a blast furnace is highly requested locally and internationally as an environmental target. To do that it is necessary to investigate the effects of different reaction parameters that controlling the reduction reaction before the high temperature region of blast furnace. In the high temperature region, the final reduction step from the wustite (FeO) phase to iron (Fe) is taking place depending on direct reduction with solid carbon; this step is considered as the main factor for the coke consumption and CO2 evolution in the blast furnace.
Therefore, thorough investigation for this critical step through more fundamental research is highly required. Hence in the current work, the controlling parameters for the final reduction stage (FeO to Fe) including the reaction temperature, composition of reducing gas mixture and the water–gas shift reaction are precisely studied and the optimum conditions for enhancement of the reducibility of wustite before the high temperature region to control and restrict the coke gasification and CO2 emission are determined.
