Abstract The aim of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of a program based on Academic Controversy in developing EFL speaking skills among first year secondary school students. The sample of the present study included (50) students. They were assigned into two groups; the experimental group (N=25) that received the program based on academic controversy and the control group (N=25). The instruments of the present study included an EFL speaking skills test and a rubric to analyze the students’ performance in speaking. The EFL speaking test was applied to the two groups to make sure that the two groups were equivalent in their EFL speaking skills and identifying the level of the experimental group students before implementing the program. After implementing the program on the experimental group, the EFL speaking skills test was applied again to the two groups. Findings of the study revealed that the experimental group students’ EFL speaking skills were developed as a result of the program that was taught to them. Therefore, it can be concluded that the program based on academic controversy is effective. |
