Abstract

Three weedy species, namely; Cynanchum acutum, Malva parviflora and Chenopodium murale were selected for this ecophysiological study. Plant samples (leaves and stems) in addition to soil samples were collected from five different sites representing different habitats.
On the basis of the results of this study, extracts of the studied weedy species have significant antioxidant activity compared to other, well characterized, standard antioxidant systems in vitro. Moreover, the target weedy species can be used as an easily accessible and rich source of natural antioxidants, as a food supplement (e.g. Malva parviflora) or in the pharmaceutical industry (Cynanchum acutum, Malva parviflora and Chenopodium murale).
The information provided in this study also introduce a picture of the ecophysiology of the three weedy species which supports future control strategies and enables efficient management of this invasive agricultural weeds and natural area invaders.
