Abstract

Green concrete (GC) capable for sustainable development is characterized bv application of
industrial wastes to decrease consumption of natural resources, energy and pollution of the
environment. Marble powder (MP) can be used as filler and helps to reduce the total voids
content in concrete. Natural sand (NS) in many parts of the country is not graded properly and
has excessive silt, on other hand, quarry rock dust (QRD) does not contain silt or organic
impurities and can be produced to meet desired gradation and fineness as per requirement.
Consequently, this contributes to improve the strength of concrete. In such a situation the quarry
rock dust can be an economic alternative to the river sand. Quarry rock dust can be defined as
residue, tailing or other non-voluble waste material after the extraction and processing of rocks to
form fine particles less than 4.75mm. Usually, quarry rock dust is used in large scale in the
highways as a surface finishing material and also used for manufacturing of hollow blocks and
lightweight concrete. Through reaction with the concrete admixture, marble powder and quarry
rock dust improved pozzolanic reaction, micro-aggregate filling, ilnd concrete durability. The
experimental test program was designed to achieve the research objectives of study. The program
consists of two phases. Phase I was designed to produce concrete mixes for normal concrete and
concrete with limestone waste, in cement content 350 kg/m”. Further more, the effect of the
different content of silica fume (SF) or marble powder on the properties of concrete mixes was
studied and the most suitable mixes to be considered concrete were chosen. The above
experiment is repeated with the same components but with different content of cement in phase
H. In the experimental work, the fresh concrete properties (slump test) and the hardened concrete
properties (compressive strength, tensile strength, Ilcxural strength, modulus of clasticitv and
permeability) were carried out. A total of Fifty-six concrete mixtures were performed with
different cement contents of 350 and 450Kg/m3 at W/C =: 0.47, the amount of water was adjusted
according to cementitious materials content ( cement + silica fume or marble powder) .the
superplasticizer dosage was added by weight from cementitous materials ( cement + silica fume
or marble powder) to achieve the required level of workability defined by a slump value
of JO± 2cm.
