Abstract A disfigured cornea can impair an individual’s self-confidence and can adversely affect one’s social and professional lives. Therefore, ophthalmologists might consider cosmetic repair as one of the potential treatment options for corneal opacities in carefully selected cases to improve both the patient’s social relationships and personal sense of well-being. Corneal opacity occurs mostly because of trauma, but it can be caused by complications from infectious ocular disease or from ocular surgery for retinal detachment or cataract. Because corneal opacity tends, with few exceptions, to become permanent, it can cause significant cosmetic problems. Regardless of the size and severity of the opacity, such cosmetic problems can cause significant psychological stress to patients and may result in depression and social isolation. Corneal tattooing has a major role in cosmetic treatment of corneal opacity in non-seeing eye. It has been practiced for almost 2000 years. Several different methods exist today. Generally include superficial corneal staining or deep intralamellar corneal staining using different channels. It is done either by chemical dying or by direct coloring with different pigments. |
