Abstract City centers are affected by a number of factors, including but not limited to, the various uses of the buildings (residential, commercial or administrative), the traffic congestion and the inadequacy of the existing urban fabric to the changes of the means of transportation. Therefore, this thesis, through its consecutive chapters, studies the impact of the uses of the buildings and the means of transportation on the road network in the city center. This thesis has been divided into three main chapters: Chapter one: Characteristics of the design and planning for city centers : This chapter deals with the theories and the determinants of the city centers and their characteristics. It also investigates the causes of the changes that have taken place and how much the urban fabric has been affected by them. This chapter ends with analyzing the problems of the city centers. Chapter two : Buildings uses, transportation and road network: This chapter focuses on the different uses of buildings and the factors that govern the functional uses within urban areas. It ends with analyzing the mutual impact between the road network, the building uses and the means of transportation. Chapter three: Applied study ( the city center of Alexandria) : This chapter begins with analyzing the study area. This includes a comprehensive survey of the buildings uses and the number of trips generated in each subset area of the study area as a result of these uses. This is followed by calculating the number of means of transportation distributed in all the sections of the study area. Finally, the trips are assigned to network connections to evaluate the level of the traffic service according to the value (volume: capacity) ( ~ ). A proposal for some alternatives that can be applied to measure the impact on the road network as a result of changing the buildings uses and the means of transportation in the region is given. The thesis ends with presenting the results and the recommendations that help to achieve the required balance resulting from the mutual interactions between these uses and the traffic on the road network in the city center to reduce the pressure on it. |
