Abstract

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of two cultivars of tomato i.e. Castl Rock and Strain B under using certain levels of potassium fertilization in between Khaya senegalensis trees grown in sandy soil (at a spacing of 3.5x3.5m and 4-year’:’old) in the Tropical Farm, Kom-Ombo, Aswan from 2007 to 2008. Tomato cultivars were tested by using 200 kg potassium sulphate and 300 kg potassium sulphate/fed (on the soil surface) as well as potassium chelate as spray at rate of 1.5 and 3 cmIL. There were significant variations in respect of growth and yield of tomato cultivars by using of the tested potassium fertilization levels in this agroforstry model. On the other hand, significantly highest values of growth and yield characters of tomato cultivars i.e. plant height, number of branches, chlorophyll a & b, carotenoides, vitamin C, titratable acidity, fruit wdght &” shape index, total yield and total soluble solids were observed when plant grown under using 300 kg potassium sulphate/ fed.
Potassium fertilization with Castl Rock cv have proven to be highly efficient means of fulfilling the best results for plant height, chlorophyll a&b, carotenoides, vitamin C, fruit weight& shape
index, and total yield. whereas, the highest values of branches number, titratable acidity, reducing sugar, number of locules/fruit and total soluble solids were obtained due to sowing Strain B cultivar.
The combination of potassium fertilization and tomato cuItivars in this agroforestry system has been found to be hi h1i a.nufifiiul
in improving JllCan of annual height and diameter growth as well as potassium content in leaves of khaya trees. Moreover, the integration of potassium fertilization at 300 kg potassium sulphate/fed with tomato plants results in remarkably positive benefit of khaya growth.
In conclusion, both residues of the used trees and adding potassium fertilizer played an important role in contributing nutrition to the alleyed crops and trees in the agroforestry system. However, utilization and recycling of soil nutrients is improved. Wood or other tree products are produced in addition to agronomic crops, with no reduction in crop yields per unit area.
In a limited resources countly like Egypt, agroforestry system can playa significant contribution of the multiple component yield and economic condition of the farmers. from this study, tomato in
