Abstract Avian influenza virus is type A influenza virus that belongs to orthomyxovirus family. They cause seasonal epidemics by Antigenic drift, while pandemics occur by antigenic shift. H5N1 influenza virus can cause severe human infection with a mortality rate exceeding 50%. The highest case fatality rate is among persons aged 10-39 years. It’s transmitted in humans by aerosols and symptoms vary from severe, cough and GIT manifestations to respiratory failure. Clinical specimens should be taken within 3 days of symptom onset and the definitive diagnosis is a positive viral culture or a four fold rise in serum neutralizing antibody titre. Vaccination represents the best protection but as that there is no pandemic so there is no vaccine. Oseltamivir is the drug of choice. Airborne precautions, standard precautions and DROPlet precautions are recommended for the care of patients infected with HSN1 influenza. |
