Abstract

Systemic vasculitis is an uncommon disorder, but due to its aggressive nature and high incidence of mortality, it should be well studied. Up till now, no single classification or diagnostic criteria is sufficient to diagnose all cases. Understanding pathogenic mechanisms and knowing different etiologic factors is a point of special concern hoping to find new drugs that attack certain steps in the pathogenesis and stopping the progression of the disease. Histological examination of biopsies from different sites has a very important role in diagnosing these disorders. Laboratory investigations and different imaging modalities are important tools which demonstrate the pathology and extent of damage in these group of disorders.
Renal affection in systemic vasculitis is a very important issue. Due to the large number and different sizes of renal blood vessel, kidneys are a main target for vasculitis as a part of multisystem disease or alone in limited forms of vasculitis. Treatment of renal vasculitis needs a long period of time starting from induction of remission to the disease, them maintaining this remission. Many drugs are used, more and more drugs are still under trials and some show promising results, but still need some time to be available for clinical use.
Future carries a lot of diagnostic tools, points for classification and treatment strategies that may enhance survival, decrease morbidity and organ damage.
