Abstract

Pesticides are well recognized as an economic approach to control pests, at the same time such chemicals are highly toxic to all animal species in the environment especially aquatic organisms including fishes. In the present study the hazard effect of sublethal toxicity of carbofuran and Fuji-one on the reproductive performance of Nile tilapia, one of the most popular fish in Egypt. After the experimentally determination of 96-LC50 for both pesticides, long term exposure (two monthes) of the fish to sublethal concentrations of carbofuran and fuji-one was done. Fish suffered a shock firstly and showed hyperexcitability, later on showed exhaustion and stayed motionless. At the end of the experiment destructive effects of carbofuran and fuji-one on blood parameters (RBCs, Hb, Hct), erythrocyte derived indices (MCH, MCHC, CI and MCV) and plasma biochemical parameters (glucose, total proteins, total lipid, urea and creatinen) as well as transaminases (AST and ALT) and testosterone and estradiol β17. All parameters measured in this study displayed dose dependent pattern of changes with both pesticides concentrations. These destructive effects were also confirmed by histopathological changes in liver, testis and ovary.
