Abstract
In the present study, a total number of 200 wild Clarias gariepinus (50 fish in each season) ranged between 45 to 315 g in body weight and from 18 to 39 cm in total body length, were collected alive from various localities of Kafr El – Sheikh Governorate during the different seasons of 2011.
The total prevalence with internal parasites was 97 % as 194 fish were infested; the highest seasonal prevalence was during winter and summer seasons (100 %), began to decrease in autumn (98%) and reached the lowest level during spring (90 %).
The encysted metacercariosis is the most prevailing internal parasitic disease infesting wild African catfish Clarias gariepinus followed by Cestodiasis, Microsporidiosis, Nematodiasis, Trematodiasis, Henneguyasis, trypanosomiasis, Myxobolosis and Acanthocephalosis with infestation rate of (87, 65, 61.5, 34, 32.5, 19, 12, 6, 0.5) % respectively.
Both praziquantel and triclabendazole were effective against Orientocreadium bactrachoid in vitro and can be used in treatment of infested fish with this trematode but from economical point of view praziquantel was less expensive than triclabendazole.
