Abstract

Background: Clinical nurses specialist (CNSs) shortage is one of the big problems in intensive care units (ICUs) where the patients are acutely ill. Every patient requires immediate access to expert CNS with advanced know ledge and skills in critical care units. Shortage of clinical nurses specialist have negative impact on patients and nurses .. Healthy work environment could solve the shortage problem. Objective: This study aimed to study clinical nurses specialist perception toward nursing shortage in intensive care units. Also to fmd out the causes, impact, and the strategies to solve shortage problems. Method: The study was conducted at ICUs of Tanta Main University and Emergency Hospitals. Study subject (l0 1) CNSs, classified into (50) were working in lCUs at Tanta Main University Hospital, and (51) working in lCUs at Emergency Hospital. Data were collected by the Nursing Shortage Perception Scale consisted of (l0) sub scales. CNSs perception on job characteristics, job and career satisfaction, nursing practice environment (staffmg and resources adequacy, manager ability, leadership, and support of nurses, collegial nurse - physician relations and job autonomy), how CNS spend their time during the work, quality of current work setting, mainreasons for the nursing shortage (personal, organizational, societal and educational factors), impact of nursing shortage on patients and nursing staff, employer efforts to improve recruitment of CNSs, strategies to solve the shortage, and amount and type of overtime required.
