Abstract Adipose tissue is a normal constituent of the human that serves the important function of storing energy as fat for mobilization in response to metabolic demands. Obesity is an excess of body fat frequently resulting in a significant impairment of health. The excess fat accumullation is associated with increased fat cell size, and for less extent fat cell number. tvIany classifications for human obesity have been proposed. However, these classific- ations do not prevent interactive effects of several potential ~uses. Although the etiologic mechanisms underlying obesity equire further clarification the net effect of such echanisms lead to an imbalance between energy intake and xpenditure. lJoth genetic and envIronmental factors are ikely to be involved in the occurence of obesity. These nclude excess caloric intake, decreased physical activity, nd metabolic and endocrine abnormalities. Because the recise determination of the amount of body fat requires ~hnically sophisticated methods that are available only n research laboratories, simple and convenient anthropometric asurements are highly recommended to assess body fat with easonable range of accuracy. Anthropometric measurements ased on stature, weight, skinfold thicknesses, and body irths were found to be the most useful in this field. |
