Abstract

Ten patients had been selected for this study. The selected patients exhibited bilateral distal extension mandibular edentulous areas with the second premolar the last standing abutment.
The slected patients were devided into two equal groups according to the planned used retainer.
Group A: patients received mandibular partial denture with resilient attachment.
Group B: patients received mandibular partial denture with telescopic retainer relieved gingivally with 60degree taper.
The effect of each retainer on the denture supporting structure was evaluated by measuring:
1-Changes in alveolar bone height of the residual ridge just distal to the abutment.
2-Pocket depth around abutment.
Periapical radiograph were made following the long cone parallel technique foe evaluation bone height changes distal to the abutments, Pocket depth was measured by graduated periodontal probe.
All the collected data at time of denture insertion and 3, 6, 12 month were arranged, tabulated and statistically analyzed.
The results obtained from this study showed that, there was no statistically significant difference between the amounts of bone loss and changes in pocket depth in the two groups.
