Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary hepatic malignancy worldwide, with an increasing incidence. It is the most common cause of death in patients with cirrhosis and accounts for 5.6% of all cancers. It is the fifth most common cancer in the world and the third most common cause of cancer death.
Patients & Methods : This cohort study included 300 patrients of HCC diagnosed at Oncology Centers of Sharkia Oncology Unit of Internal Medicine, Zagazig University and Fakous Center of oncology between May 2010 to May 2012. Data collected including incidence, underlying chronic liver diseases, child classification and treatment modalities used.
Results : Among our patients 78(26%) were female and 222 (74%) were males. Age ranged from 33 to 74 years. Abdonminal pain and abdominal onlargment were the most common clinical presentation. 47% of the patients had HCV, 17% had HBV, while 13% had both HCV & HBV. Prevalent 32%, 16% had DM and 62% were smokers. 21% of patients were child pugh classification while, 67% of patients were in advanced stage according to BCLC.
Conclusion : The majority of HCC patient in Sharkia are diagnosed at advanced stage and most of these patients have underlying chronic liver disease with poor Pugh Child Score making them candidates. And This vertifies the role of screening for HCC early detection.
