Abstract

Field and laboratory studies were conducted on the broad mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus through out the year 2008-2009 at Gaziert El Dahab, Giza governorate (Agricultural Research Center), Egypt. The study included the morphological details of each stage of the mite life cycle using light and surface scanning electron microscopy. Population fluctuations of P. latus on six pepper cultivars and their relation with various meteorological variables were determined. The study revealed the seasonal fluctuations of two species of predaceous mites associated with P. latus. Susceptibility of different pepper cultivars to the infestation of P. latus revealed significant differences in adults. Influence of leaf chemical components on P. latus infestation was studied. Dispersal of P. latus revealed its attachment to three phoretic insects. Damage symptoms of pepper plants due to infestation were described. The study revealed that pepper plant is a more suitable diet than cucumber for P. latus as revealed by lower duration periods of developmental stages and greater number of eggs which are essential for mite survival and population build up. The evaluation of seven pesticides against P. latus infestation revealed that Abamectin was the most effective.
