Abstract Clinical, Radiographic and ultrasonographic were done on 56 horses suffered from tarsal lameness. Arthroscopic studies were conducted on ten horses for clarify the normal arthroscopic picture, diagnosis and treatment of osteochondrosis dissecans, intra articular fracture fragment and septic arthritis. The study was conducted in department of Surgery, Anesthesiology and Radiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University during the period between Jan. 2008 and Sept 2012. The normal anatomy, radiography, ultrasonography and arthroscopy of the tarsal region were described. The tarsal region was divided anatomically into four regions (dorsal, lateral, medial and plantar). The tarsal affections were represented 25.5% from the total examined cases. Radiography was effective and most accessible in diagnosis of tarsal bone lesions such as bony spavin, OCD, osteomyleitis, physitis, fractures and subluxations. Ultrasound was superior in detection of soft tissue damages as tendonitis, collateral ligament desmitis, and early diagnosis of fibrinous and septic arthritis, bog spavin, thorough pin and curb. Arthroscopy was superior in examination of articular cartilage, synovial membrane and detection of intra articular fracture and OC fragments. Arthroscopy was successfully used in surgical removal of intra articular fracture and OCD fragments. |
