Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of MDR-1 gene (P-gp), and two proteins related to apoptosis (P53 and Bcl-2) in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients and their correlation to patients’ outcome. P-gp, P53 and Bcl-2 expression were measured on cell surface (P-gp) and intracellulary (P53 and Bcl-2) by flow cytometry on blood mononuclear cells from those patients at diagnosis and at complete remission. There was a highly significant elevation in P-gp, P53 and Bcl-2 expressions observed in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients at diagnosis compared to controls. At complete remission, there is a significant difference increases in case of P-gp but for P53 and Bcl-2 expressions there is no significant differences were found between non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients at remission and healthy control group. P-gp, P53 and Bcl-2 were significantly highly expressed in non-survived compared to survived group. In conclusion, proteins related to both apoptosis and multidrug resistances are among the most widely characterized drug resistance mechanisms leading to unsuccessful treatment of NHL.
